CDC 2022 METHOD · HIGH BMI VALUES

Extended BMI percentile calculator

The CDC 2022 extended method gives more separation among BMI values above the 95th-percentile threshold. This calculator selects it automatically when the entered BMI is in that range.

WORKED EXAMPLE

BMI 22.6 at 50.5 months

For a boy aged 50.5 months, BMI 22.6 produces an extended BMI percentile of about 99.8. The result is a reference comparison, not a clinical conclusion.

CDC 2000 LMSAt or below the age- and sex-specific 95th-percentile threshold.Standard BMI-for-age comparison.
CDC 2022 extended BMIAbove that 95th-percentile threshold.Preserves meaningful separation among higher values.

What the extended calculation adds

The 95th-percentile BMI anchors a half-normal distribution, and CDC’s age- and sex-specific sigma equations position higher BMI values. The method changes the calculation, not the need for careful measurement and clinical context.

Measure height carefully

A small height error can noticeably change BMI because height is squared in the formula. Use standing height without shoes and weight measured on the same date.

Questions parents ask

Why is an extended BMI method needed?

The original CDC 2000 LMS curves compress very high BMI values near the top of the distribution. CDC published an extended method to distinguish values above the 95th-percentile threshold.

Does 99th percentile mean 99% body fat?

No. It means the BMI is higher than approximately 99% of the age- and sex-specific reference distribution. It is not a body-fat percentage.

Is the extended result a diagnosis?

No. It is a more informative reference calculation for high BMI values, but clinical interpretation still requires a qualified healthcare professional.
